About the Words Songs and Music

In 1986 I met a musician by the name of Steven Scott.  We both had an interest in music and song writing, even though our equipment was very sparse.

I had an H and H valve amplifier and an echo chamber, a Columbus Les Paul copy, a keyboard and an old reel to reel recorder.  The equipment was just about good enough for us to use for song writing and keeping a record of what we were doing.

It didn't take long for us to be able to work together in the creation of music and song writing.  His musical tastes were similar to mine and in the first weeks of writing we had put a rough copy of a song down on to tape.  The first song was called 'Can't Move Mountains'.

Over a period of time as we got to know each other better he brought up two songs that he had written, and I produced my first piece of work and some more and we started working on them to try and change the styles and words to get the music right.

After nine months of writing songs and some of the music for the songs that we were writing, we copyrighted them and moved on.  Scottie went his way and I continued working on the music for some of the songs.  I did that for about a year and was able to get some of the styles that I would like to have seen with some of the songs that we had put together.  I then put them on the top shelf so that I could grow old gracefully - some hope of that.

A few years ago I came across John McLean and Arthur McNair.  Both accomplished musicians.  We started working on some cover versions and when we had the time we managed to work on some of the material that I had put on the top shelf but not forgotten about.

Again we moved on in our separate ways, but I still felt that I had to try and finish the work that I had started many years ago.  Before we parted we put some tracks down on to a four track recorder so that I could come back to them at a later date.

John McLean the Bass player and myself decided to continue working together on the music that we had created, and we decided to record what we could in my house.  We worked slowly on some of these songs - and still do.

Given the equipment and our age - coming up for sixty - we are maybe not quite as fast as we used to be, but we still work away on these songs and the music.

I would like to think that each song that was written told a story that is still relevant today.  Some of the songs that we have managed to complete maybe a bit rough, whereas others might not sound not too bad.  That's down to the equipment that we are using, because it's not a proper recording studio.  A computer and a clapped out old four track recorder is all we use.

These songs and words are no good lying on the top shelf doing nothing so I have decided to put some of this material on to this site.

Some Cover Versions performed by "Ulterior"

Andrew Murphy, John McClean and Arthur McNair playing around with music

Anyone who want's to sing or play music starts with a cover version.  We used to do the run of them, Knocking on Heavens Door, Sundown, Can't Help Falling, There goes My Everything, The Green Green Grass of Home and many more.  We never used to bother recording them, but now and again the recorder was there, so we would flick the switch so that we could iron out any problems with the song.  I found some recordings by Arthur McNair, John McLean and myself.  So here are five of them, I can always say the condition were not right, but I'm not, this is the way they were done,  And some of them might be unconventional, but is that not what music's all about?
