Georgina Poad wins NYOS Staffa Award 2006

For the second year in a row a double bass player has won the prestigious NYOS Staffa Award. Georgina Poad (pictured) from Berkshire, who studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, succeeded over Midori Sugiyama, violin player from the Royal Northern College of Music, and Clare Jefferis, flute from the Royal College of Music.

The three young musicians competed at the public NYOS Staffa Award ceremony on 25 May 2006 at Pollok House, Glasgow. Georgina gave an impressive performance of Gliere’s Tarantella and Bottesini’s Fantasy on “La Sonnambula”.

A panel made up of conductor Julian Clayton, composer Rory Boyle and viola virtuoso James Durrant judged the finalists’ performances and awarded Georgina the top prize.

Georgina received £3000 to further her career in professional music. She intends to put it towards the cost of a new instrument:  "Since starting my studies at the Royal Academy, my teacher has recommended that at this level I really should be playing a better instrument. I have been playing my current Double Bass since purchasing it in Edinburgh at the age of 14," said Georgina.

Georgina began playing the double bass at the Royal College of Music Junior Department when she was 9 years old and within two years had won a place at the renowned Yehudi Menuhin School. Today her playing has taken her all over the UK, USA, Europe and South America.

Midori received the second prize (£1500) and Clare the third prize (£1000).

GEORGINA POAD is currently in her first year at the Royal Academy of Music on the postgraduate diploma course studying with Corin Long and Duncan McTier. She completed her undergraduate studies with the Open University whilst working, travelling and studying privately with teachers in the UK and USA.  Georgina began playing the double bass at the Royal College of Music Junior Department when she was 9 years old and within two years had won a place at the Yehudi Menuhin School. In 1997 she won the second prize at the International Society of Bassist competition in Houston and was selected as Principal Bass of the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles.  She returned to the USA in 2004 and 2005 to take up invitations to the Elite Soloist Program at the University of North Texas to study with Jeff Bradetich. A busy musician, her playing has taken her all over the UK, USA, Europe and South America. She has been a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra since 2003 and is this year enjoying rehearsing and performing with the London Symphony Orchestra as a student in the LSO String Experience Scheme.
