Combining an intelligent, moving study of loyalty and loss with an eloquent critique of the effects of social exclusion, this third EIFF premiere confirms the director of Gas Attack (EIFF 2001) and Yasmin (EIFF 2002) as a major British talent. His leading man, meanwhile, has never been better. Watchful, damaged, fixated on his own past and fraught in his efforts to be good, Carlyle's Shaun is a heartbreakingly recognisable creation. HM
