Distinctive British Saxophonist Mark Lockheart tours with BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician 2008 and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland

Mark Lockheart, one of the most distinctive and creative musicians on the current British music scene will this summer, appear in concert with talented young Saxophonist Joe Wright, recent winner of The BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician 2008 competition.  The pair will perform, alongside The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS), an innovative programme of contemporary, boundary pushing music, at various venues around Scotland, for NYJOS’ annual summer tour.

Renowned saxophonist and jazz improviser Mark Lockheart’s work often defies categorisation and crosses the boundaries of the jazz, new music and folk worlds. In the run up to the tour he will be working with students from The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and Ensemble Directors, Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain to create an exciting and original tour repertoire featuring new arrangements and unique improvisations, plus re-workings of some old jazz favourites.

Joe Wright, who has been a member of The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland since 2005 joins the ensemble for this tour fresh from performances with Tommy Smith’s Youth Jazz Orchestra and his own newly formed trio at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival, where he was also crowned BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician 2008.  This summer’s star-studded NYJOS ensemble also includes two other finalists from the competition; Kieran McLeod (Trombone) and John Lowrie (Drums) and last year’s winner Alan Benzie on Piano.

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland

Formed to meet the growing demand for high quality training for young jazz musicians in Scotland, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS) made its debut in 1996 and has since become known as one of Scotland’s foremost youth jazz ensembles.

NYJOS aims to provide students with the opportunity to study and perform jazz at the highest possible level, with respected professional musicians from the UK and beyond.

NYJOS has given concerts at a variety of prestigious jazz venues throughout Britain.  The ensemble often commissions and premières new works, and works which have

been arranged specifically for them to perform.  In addition to giving live performances, NYJOS has released CD recordings and runs training workshops throughout Scotland.
