Paper Tigers
During the 1990s I was approached by a student who was in his final year at college and who had to make a video for his final HND degree. In his project he wanted to get two regular letter writers to the Edinburgh Evening News with different opinions.
Some might say one that leans to the left and the other who leaned to the right of the political spectrum. Douglas Goodfellow and myself both fitted the criteria and were asked to participate in this project because we were both well published letter writers with different opinions. We both agreed, and the filming began over a period of time before the finished product was shown at the Filmhouse on Lothian Road.
Neither of us had met each other before this video was filmed, so we did not know what to expect. We discussed various issues at lunch when we met up for the first time, and when it was all over Douglas and I kept in contact because in reality our views might not have been so far apart when we got to know each other.
Sadly after this video was made Douglas got ill again and decided not to go through any more treatment for cancer. I'm sure if he had still been alive today we would have still be in contact with each other. Douglas died, but his views are still as relevant today as they were when he was a letter writer to the Edinburgh Evening News. I stopped writing letters to the Edinburgh Evening News when I set up my website, but the letters page is still one of my favourite pages in this paper. The video is thirty five minutes long and the staff at the Edinburgh Evening News have changed since this video was made, but this is still the paper of my choice.
